Soothe Thy Neural Pathways, VP Session 2

Listening to music must be one of the most enigmatic of human behaviours. The majority of human behaviours have an identified value that can be linked to the motives of procreation and survival. Every culture that anthropologists have studied has found to make some form of music. Now, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology through new radical approaches for studying the brain identified neural pathways that react almost completely to the sound of music.

Music has been explored as an effective tool for emotion regulation and memory consolidation. It not only offers itself as an outlet, but the idea of using song, sound frequencies and rhythm to heal body ailments is a relatively new field that has recently gained attention. It has been discovered through neuroscientific research that music has the ability to enhance the body's immune system, whilst also reducing stress. Based on testing, listening to music has been found to be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety in patients before surgery (APA).
